The Pamlico County Board of Education is excited to announce the selection of Dr. Jeremy Bruce Johnson as the next superintendent of Pamlico County Schools. Dr. Johnson’s selection was unanimously approved by the Pamlico County Board of Education at the Pamlico County Schools Board of Education meeting on Monday, August 7, 2023. The change will be effective September 1, 2023.
John Prescott, Chairman of the Pamlico County Schools’ Board of Education, states, “The Board of Education has thoughtfully and carefully reviewed applications from a diverse field of candidates from across the state. While many qualified candidates applied, it was decided that the leadership, and dedication to the students and staff of Pamlico County Schools Dr. Johnson has shown throughout his career would best serve Pamlico County Schools’ students, employees, and community for years to come. The Board of Education is confident Dr. Johnson will lead our great school system in our continued tradition of success and excellence.”
Dr. Johnson has had a long and successful career in public education, spanning nearly twenty five years in North Carolina with 18 years in Pamlico County. Dr. Johnson began his career as an Agriculture Teacher in Guilford County Schools for 7 years prior to coming to Pamlico County High School in 2005 where he taught Agriculture to both middle and high school students. In 2011, Dr. Johnson became assistant principal at Pamlico County Middle School for 3 years and then Principal at Fred A. Anderson Elementary School for a year before returning to Pamlico County Middle School as Principal for 6 years where he also served as Director of Digital Learning and Technology for the district. In 2022, Dr. Johnson became Director of Career and Technical Education and Federal Programs.
During his time with Pamlico County Schools, Dr. Johnson has been a confident leader through challenging situations, including two floods that displaced middle school students. He worked diligently to ensure continued educational opportunities for all students while overseeing the reconstruction of Pamlico County Middle School. As Director of Technology, Dr. Johnson led Pamlico County Schools’ students and community as a whole, through the unexpected digital challenges to continued education due to COVID-19 procedures and protocol. Under his leadership, families in need were provided with hotspots and other devices required to maintain their student’s education.
Dr. Johnson has always been a believer in lifelong learning and has demonstrated this with his impressive academic background. Dr. Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Extension Education from North Carolina State University, a Masters in School Administration, and then a Doctorate of Educational Leadership, both from East Carolina University. While in the classroom, Dr. Johnson also became a National Board Certified Teacher which is the most respected professional certification available in education.
Dr. Johnson lives in the Reelsboro community with his wife Ashley. The Johnson’s have two sons, Noah and Wyatt. Noah is a junior at North Carolina State University and Wyatt will be a freshman at Pamlico County High School.

Over the past eighteen years, I have worked in various roles in our district, as a teacher, administrator, and director. Each role has had its own unique challenges, but the ultimate goal has always been the same; student success. I have the same goal as superintendent, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside our dedicated educators, staff members, parents and community members to equip all of our students with the knowledge and skills that they need to be successful. We have One Mission: Student Success. ” Johnson said.
